Plan a first woven garment

Choose a simple shape with few fitting points: a loose skirt or sleeveless top is easier to assess than a tailored jacket. Read the complete pattern before buying fabric. Compare your measurements with the pattern’s body measurements, then check the finished garment measurements for wearing ease. A size number alone is not a useful guide.

Wash and dry the fabric the way you will care for the finished garment. Press it before cutting. Mark grainlines and notches carefully, and keep offcuts for testing needle, stitch length and seam finishes. Sew a small sample seam before working on the garment.
